EFFICIENT AND ROBUST PSEUDONYMOUS AUTHENTICATION IN VANET PDF

Upcoming vehicular ad hoc networks VANETs allowing vehicles to talk to each other are expected to enhance safety and efficiency in transportation systems. This type of networks is especially attractive in highly populated urban areas overwhelmed with traffic congestions and accidents. Besides vulnerabilities versus attacks against traffic safety and driver privacy, a large-scale VANET in a metropolitan area raises scalability and management challenges. This paper employs identity-based group signatures IBGS to divide a large-scale VANET into easy-to-manage groups and establish liability in vehicular communications while preserving privacy. This efficiently avoids the complicated certificate management of existing protocols. With this approach, a vehicle selects only the messages affecting its driving decisions and validates the selected messages as if they were a single one.

Effective and robust operations, as well as security and privacy are critical for the deployment of vehicular ad hoc networks VANETs. Efficient and easy-to-manage security and privacy-enhancing mechanisms axe essential for the wide-spread adoption of the VANET technology.

In this paper, we are concerned with this problem; and in particular, how to achieve efficient and robust pseudonym-based authentication. We design mechanisms that reduce the security overhead for safety beaconing, and retain robustness for transportation safety, even in adverse network settings.

Moreover, we show how to enhance the availability and usability of privacy-enhancing VANET mechanisms: Our proposal enables vehicle on-board units to generate their own pseudonyms, without affecting the system security.

Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that the information conveyed by vehicle-generated messages is reliable. A sensible option is to request that the content of a message originated by a certain vehicle be endorsed by nearby peer vehicles. However, neither message generation nor message endorsement should entail any privacy loss on the part of vehicles co-operating in it. This chapter surveys the available solutions to this security-privacy tension and analyzes their limitations.
