On behalf of McGil We would like to take a moment to commemorate the lives that have been taken from us, such as George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and many others.
We would also like to express our condolences to the family of Regis Korchinski-Paquet and call for a thorough investigation of this case. It is important to understand the systematic racism and police brutality that is exercised on a daily basis by those who have the power in our society. As part of the Ukrainian community, we understand the importance of changing systems of oppression, and we recognize the abuses of the criminal justice and police systems that have led to the oppression of people of colour.
It is past due for us to call out the inadequacies of a system that has failed members of our communities. As students, we are the driving force to change the system. Change comes with the realization of the problem and the Black Lives Matter movement has shown that there is a grave problem within the institutions that are designed to protect us.
Now is the time to strengthen the conversation, because change was never made by staying silent. We must stand up and demand action because there is no other solution. We are stronger together.
We must amplify the voices of those being oppressed and of the marginalized groups that are repeatedly being silenced. This is the time to educate ourselves, speak out, and engage in the conversation with our families, friends, and community. We can learn about covert white supremacy and microaggressions, and support organizations leading the way for racial equity and justice.
