Course unit name: Anatomy of the Immune System. Course unit code: Academic year: Justification of the course Students of the Advanced Immunology Master need to understand that one of the main features of the immune system is its disperse location, compared to most of the physiological systems in living beings, and its structure.

This determines the need to understand the location and topology of the different anatomical components of the immune system and their interconnection with the rest of the body. Competences After the course students will: 1.

Understand the anatomy of the immune system and its normal functioning as a global system. Understand the concept of haematopoiesis as a generator of immune cell diversity 3.

Understand the specific characteristics of the immune response at different locations 4. Explain the mechanisms driving cell traffic and their relationship with the immune response. General objective The aim of the course is for the students to achieve a full understanding of the localization, distribution and structure of the different components of the immune system.

Primary lymphoid organs. The foetal liver and the bone marrow. Structure and cellular composition of the thymus. Differentiation and maturation of T and B cells. The lymphatic system. High endothelial venules.

Leukocyte extravasation. Homing receptors and chemokines. Effector and memory cell trafficking. Role of adhesion molecules. Secondary lymphoid organs. Cell composition and structure of the resting lymph node. Changes during the immune response. The spleen. Cell composition and structure of the white pulp and the red pulp. The spleen contribution to the immune response. The mucosal immune tissue MALT. Structure and cellular composition of the tonsils, Peyer patches, appendix and skin.

The mucosal immune response. Lectures 18h Six lectures. These classes are intended to achieve the general objective of the course. This implies the students to work actively and continuously.

Therefore the students must work on the lecture topic prior to attend the class. This preliminary work will consist of readings of reports, reviews and book chapters and try to resolve questions or issues to be able to discuss them in class. For each hour of class time task may represent two working hours of self learning.

This continuous work should allow the students to pass a written test at the end of the lectures. Practicals 3h A practical session on histology of the immune system with the participation of histology Dr. Pumarola and immunology Dr. Finding additional information on the suggested internet resources, 8h. Preparing the tutoring sessions, 1,5h. Assessment 2h Final multiple choice test. The course will be evaluated with a maximum of 10 points following the criteria established in the joint assessment modules to obtain the MSc.
